Nepal Information
Geography
The Republican of Nepal covers an area of 147, 181 square kilometers, and stretches 145-241 kilometers north to south and 850 kilometers west to east. The country is located between India in the south and China in the north. At latitudes 26 and 30 degrees north and longitudes 80 and 88 degrees east, Nepal is topographically divided into three regions.
The People
In the northern region of high Himalayas, the Tibetan speaking, the Sherpas, the Dolpas, the Lopas, the Baragaonlis, the Manangis live in different settlements scattered along the country. The Sherpas are mainly confined in the east in the Solu and Khumbu region.
Flora & Fauna
Nepal is a land of geographical extremes, ranging from near sea-level elevations in the southern Terai to the world's highest mountains. The country contains a variety of ecosystems; treeless sub-alpine pastures and dense fir forests of the high valleys, oak and rhododendron woods of the middle hills, and tall sal forests of the south.
Art & Architecture
Speckled with numerous exemplary works of art and architecture, Kathmandu Valley stands a testimony to ancient Nepal's inclination toward the aesthetics. Several monuments in the Valley have been listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, is the only World Heritage Site outside the Valley in South Nepal.
Festivals
Most festivals honor a deity with worshippers crowding around a shrine to perform puja. Temple courtyards are filled with long lines of people waiting to teast. Great processions wind through thestreets of the three old cities. Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan, accompained by bands of Newar musicians and masked dancers. Sometimes idols of gods are paraded in gigantic wooden chariot shrines unique to Nepal.
Religion
Religious practices are an important part of the lives of the Nepalese people. Mythologies of various Hindu gods and goddesses abound in this country and cultural values are based on the philosophies of holy books like the Gita, Ramayana, etc. Women and children visit neighborhood shrines at dawn to offer worship to the gods.

Some Useful Tips
The Nepalese people are friendly and hospitable by nature and the tourists in general will have no difficulty in adjustment. At the same, one may be confused regarding some customs, traditions andmanners as in coming into any unfamiliar society. Nepal like any other country, has its own ways of regulating life though it might be different in degrees to each individual visitors. We want the visitors to observe and see the ways of Nepalese people and share with them. It is in this spirit that we offer some practical guidelines that could help to make the stay delightful and rewarding.
Social Outlook
Since the majority of our people live in rural areas, their outlook to life is simple and traditional. In fact, they take special delight in the company of foreign visitors but there are certain things that are alien or embarrassing to Nepalese people. Here are few things to keep in mind.
Tourist Police
We would like to state that the Tourist Police is a special unit of Nepal Police, which is working under Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Tourism Industry Division. Our office is located at Bhrikuti Mandap, Kathmandu, Tourist Service Center Building, and also we have complaint counters at the Airport and Basantapur Durbar Square. We are always attentive to deal with the problems of tourist and we are very sensitive in your security.
Security for Visitors
Tourist Police was established in 1979 under the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation. The special unit has been designated the task of providing security to visitors. The team of Tourist Police consists of officers who can speak and understand English and Hindi. They register complaints, investigate matters, provide protection and safety to tourists. They also try to ensure hassle-free trip for visitors and assist tourists when necessary. There are three units of Tourist Police forces in Kathmandu. While the main office is at the Tourist Service Center in Bhrikuti Mandap (Phone: 4247041, 4247037), the other two are in tourist areas Thamel (Phone: 4429750) and Basantapur (Phone: 4268969).
Equipment Check List
If you don't already have good equipment, it can be bought or rented from trekking shops in Nepal. The equipment is often top quality. Although daily rental charges are reasonable, a large deposit may be required. A good down sleeping bag, a rucksack, down pants and down jacket can each be rented for around US $ 1 each per day. On the other hand, the total deposit can easily come to over US $ 100.
Bank
Banks are open between 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.from Monday to Thursday and between 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Fridays. They are closed on Saturdays,Sundays and other holidays in the Kathmandu Valley.In other places banks are closed on Saturdays and government holidays.
